Located outside the town walls, at the side of Monte Croce, along via Regina, in an area that has always been of great importance for churches and necropolis. The Basilica of Sant'Abbondio is a church built between 1050 and 1095 on a pre-existing 5th century Paleochristian basilica. The church was a cathedral (818-1013) and then an abbey church (1013-1783). Taking a classical appearance in the 16th century, the church regained its Romanesque style from the 19th century. The Sant'Abbondio Basilica is one of Lake Como’s oldest and most interesting Romanesque churches. Its sleek shape, the twin bell towers and the plain façade recall an uncommon style for that age.
