Wedding Invitations Made Simple: (DIY) Do It Yourself

If your DIY list also includes your wedding invitations, rest assured you don’t have to be a graphic designer to achieve the beautiful typography or letterpress styles all the rage this season.

Speaking out of experience, I decided to design my own invitations for my wedding in Dubai and the results were superb! Luckily I have my boutique agency – Thinkzenmedia – So we do have graphic designers, however with that said, I typically draw and lay everything out by what I want my designers to execute (I taught myself how to navigate Illustrator and Photoshop – enough to get my idea across). Here I have outlined some of the steps I took when showing our designer Khalid what I wanted to achieve for the invitations, tags etc.

Generally, my theme kept all in typography and the silhouettes I created for my husband and I. Below you can see the process from start to finish. For more theme inspiration, you can see how I styled our DIY garden wedding using DIY paper flowers HERE.

If the thought of creating something on Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop sends you into a cold sweat – don’t stress (you have enough to worry about) why not try my easy DIY program suggestions. If you don’t have time to create your own design I have included a cool template link that will only set you back $20 – If you’re looking for ways to cut down an ever-expanding wedding budget, always remember this- your MAC or PC has some powerful programs for creating invitations!

Word, PowerPoint, Pages, Keynote or Ibooks Author are designed for your average document or presentation production, these programs are great and shouldn’t be passed over. These easy to use programs allow you to easily create cards and stationery that can then be printed at home.

If you don’t already have these programs, most are free on the app store, some (such as Ibooks Author) have additional templates already created you can purchase for a small fee – so all you have to do is drop in images and change the content. Note: These programs are great for designs that don’t require complicated photo editing / manipulation. If you are printing, remember they need to be hi-res (300 DPI) for optimum quality. If you’re being environmentally friendly and the purpose of the design is for screen only, then you don’t have to include such high-resolution images. When taking your prints to an outside printer, just remember to save the final version as a PDF – otherwise your printer might not support the cool font you purchased online!
